about

Narrative:
The 2008 election also spurned Pete to adapt this famous struggle song (with the original lyrics by Florence Reece in response to the Harlan County coal wars of the 1930s) to talk about what a resurgent National Party would do if they got into power. Pete would often say his lyrics are very often ‘very didactic’ – and his lyrics here are a prime example. In this song, Pete really had it in for the National Party. He had worked so hard for policies that’d provide lasting benefits for working people and he didn’t want to see these deconstructed.” – RT

lyrics

Oh workers can you stand it, come listen to their lies
Of how the National Party wants to change your lives

Which side are you on? Which side are you on?

Some say it’s time for change, they say it’s in the air
But when it comes to workers’ rights they simply do not care

Which side are you on? Which side are you on?

We’ve had the changes for the better, we’re not turning back
We’ve seen their plan for workers – it’s another Contracts Act

Which side are you on? Which side are you on?

The first three months on the job, your rights would be removed
All power to the bosses while the workers just get screwed

Which side are you on? Which side are you on?

Paid parental leave and four weeks holiday
Kiwisaver nest-eggs and youth on higher pay

Which side are you on? Which side are you on?

We’ve had a few improvements, but they’re not guaranteed
The Nats they voted no each time – don’t trust that flip-flop Key

Which side are you on? Which side are you on?

Are you on the roll yet and do you realise?
It’s time to get together, it’s Time to organise

Which side are you on? Which side are you on?
