about

Narrative:
“Peter wrote this song for the centenary commemorations of the Waihi miners’ strike. In 1912, striking miner Fred Evans sadly became the first New Zealand trade unionist to die in an industrial struggle. The highly bitter and divisive six month strike in Waihi played a significant role in the formation of the Labour Party the following year. On Saturday 10th November 2012 many trade unionists, historians, academics and locals congregated in Waihi for a series of centenary workshops and activities organised by the Labour History Project. You also had the sense the town was still unsettled by the events from a century before. Peter led a full line up of Not The Day job who played a very energetic and passionate version of Remember Waihi to a packed house at the Waihi RSA on that Saturday night.” – Ross Teppett

lyrics

Frederick George Evans, Frederick George Evans
Was killed in Waihi, he was taken from his family
He was a union man, he paid for that with his life
The police took him down, after six months on strike
Remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi

Tuesday twelfth of November, Tuesday the twelfth of November
He went to the union hall, and the cops and the scabs did call
And then there was a fight, and Evans he made a stand
For the union cause, he died in this land
Remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi

Thousands lined the streets, for the funeral in Auckland
Sixty eight had gone to jail, for making a union stand
Those principles live on, in our values of today
Solidarity my friends and remember Waihi
Remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi

Frederick George Evans, Frederick George Evans
Was killed in Waihi, he was taken from his family
He was a union man, he paid for that with his life
The police took him down, after six months on strike
Remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi
Remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi, remember Waihi
