about

The Organise story:
“Pete loved playing this song about working peoples’ health and safety. I started writing it after the tragic death of three contractors in downtown Auckland in 2000. They were working for the Council’s water company and were killed after going down into a sewer and being overcome by toxic gases. Later, a colleague was telling me about the dangers of underground coal mining deep underground. In 2010, 29 men died in the Pike River Mine explosion in the Paparoa Range on the West Coast of the South Island. Pike River’s senior management were incredibly anti-union and they knew they had built a ticking time-bomb. Still today the families of the twenty nine men killed in the mine explosion continue their struggle to seek justice. This song is for them.” – RT

lyrics

Four miles up and six miles down
There’s not a lot of air to go around
Is it safe again? Is it safe again?

What am I to do when the boss says to me?
‘Go down that hole where there’s no air to breathe’
(Is it safe again? Is it safe again?)

I’ve been welding all day, in a hell of mess
I’m blinded by the flash and I need a rest

Toxic sweated blood and dust
Who can working people trust?

My hands are tied, my hands are always tired
Has this ever been tried? Organise

I’ve been working in a hell of mess
I’m blinded by the flash and I need a rest

Toxic sweated blood and dust
Who can working people trust?

My hands are tied, my hands are always tired
Has this ever been tried? Organise
